A&M-SA hosts nationally renowned regional cyber defense competition

Texas A&M-San Antonio hosted the Southwest Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (SWCCDC) at Brooks City-Base on March 7-8. The SWCCDC is one of the largest collegiate cyber defense competitions in the world and draws competitors from universities across the southwest region, which includes Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Defense technology company Raytheon is the title sponsor of the national event.

Teams gathered to compete at Brooks City-Base Campus from Texas A&M-San Antonio, Texas A&M University, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Sam Houston State University, Southern Methodist University, New Mexico State University, University of Tulsa, University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson was invited to present at The Texas A&M University System's annual Chancellor's Century Council (CCC) meeting on February 27-28, updating members of the audience on A&M-San Antonio's status and vision for the future.


A&M-SA professor recognized by A&M System for excellence

Dr. Debbie Vera, associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Kinesiology, was inducted into the Texas A&M University System Chancellor's Academy of Teacher Educators on February 27 during the System's annual Chancellor's Century Council (CCC) meeting. The Academy recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of teacher education and highlights the role of the A&M System in producing K-12 teachers for the state of Texas. Biology students excel in annual Wildlife Plant Identification Competition photoBiology students excel in annual Wildlife Plant Identification Competition

A&M-SA biology students continue an outstanding performance at the Intercollegiate Range and Wildlife Plant Identification Competition at the 51st annual Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society (TCTWS) meeting on February 19-21. More than 700 people attended the meeting from across Texas and undergraduates from multiple universities and community colleges competed in the competitions.

The A&M-SA team, Allison Huerta, Ashley Kilby, David Perez, Kalin Skinner and Natalie Thunderbolt, was sponsored by Dr. Dean Wiemers, adjunct professor in biology and plant identification coach, and placed first in their division and third overall. The Range and Wildlife Plant Identification competition requires students to identify 120 Texas plants! In the individual competition, Ashley Kilby and Kalin Skinner took home first and second place, respectively, for correctly identifying the greatest number of plants within the 2 year division.

Business student represents A&M-SA at World Affairs Council Gala

Thomas Beighley, international business student and former Marine, was the recipient of the McCombs Foundation sponsored seat at the 2015 World Affairs Council International Citizen of the Year Gala. Thomas was seated at a table sponsored by the McCombs Foundation and was joined by other students studying an international major from Trinity, St. Mary's, Our Lady of the Lake, and the University of the Incarnate Word.

The International Citizen of the Year Award was established in 1985 to honor an individual who has made a significant contribution toward increasing awareness of global issues and the growth of San Antonio's importance as an international city. This very prestigious award is presented annually at a black tie dinner and is the World Affairs Council's largest and most important event.

Recipients of the 2015 Award were Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro and U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro. Retired U.S. Navy Admiral and University of Texas Chancellor William H. McRaven delivered the keynote address.

A&M-SA student presents research at state-wide symposium

Undergraduate Christopher Kichura, accompanied by Dr. John Smith and Dr. Josephine Sosa Fey, presented his research, "Effect of Pre-cooling on Short-term Anaerobic Performance" at the 2015 Texas Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol on March 4. The purpose of the conference is to showcase the experiences of undergraduate students engaged in research for Texas legislatures and the public through high-quality poster displays. This year's theme was Transforming Texas Through Undergraduate Research.

Nearly 60 projects were displayed in poster format, reflecting the work of numerous undergraduate students from over 50 universities and colleges across Texas. Click here for more information about the program.

Black History Month imageUniversity celebrates Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, the Office of Student Activities provide sounds and tastes from Jamaican culture on Wednesday, February 26 at Main Campus. Over 127 faculty, staff and students stopped by to sample the Jamaican cuisine. The menu included jerk chicken, ox tails, curry chicken, rice and beans.
